Why Your Hair Changes As You Age

Why Your Hair Changes As You Age

Shedding, thinning, seasons, hormones and what actually helps

There’s a particular kind of horror in seeing more hair in the shower than usual.

You try to stay calm. Then you check the brush. Then the ponytail. Then suddenly you’re standing under the bathroom light inspecting your part line like a tiny forensic department in pyjamas.

First, breathe.

Hair changes are common. They can happen with age, stress, seasons, health changes, hormonal shifts, styling habits, diet, illness and the general adventure of being a woman in a body that did not come with a neat instruction manual.

Rude, frankly.

There’s a lot of noise right now about perimenopause, menopause and whether women should or shouldn’t consider hormone therapy. That is a conversation for you and your trusted health professional.

Our lane is hair.

What changes. What’s normal. What may need checking. And how to care for the hair you have now.

Hair can change as you age

As we age, hair can feel different. It may become finer, drier, more fragile, less shiny, slower growing or more prone to frizz. Some women notice a thinner ponytail. Others notice more scalp showing at the part line. Some just wake up one day and realise their hair has developed a whole new personality without asking permission.

Hormonal shifts around perimenopause and menopause may play a role, but they are not the only possible reason hair changes. Female pattern hair loss can happen at any age, although Healthdirect notes it is more common after menopause.

The main point is this: changing hair is not a moral failing. It is not because you used the wrong scrunchie in 2004. Hair responds to what is happening in the body, on the scalp and in your everyday life. And our bodies, at any age, have a great capacity to heal and reverse ailments.

A little shedding is normal

Hair naturally moves through a cycle. It grows, rests, sheds, then begins again. That means seeing some hair in the brush, shower or bathroom floor is normal.

The panic usually starts when the amount seems different. More than usual. Faster than usual. Enough to make you start counting strands, which is a deeply unhinged little hobby none of us needs.

Sometimes increased shedding is temporary. It can show up after stress, illness, surgery, weight change, low nutrition, medication changes, postpartum shifts or a rough patch in life. The body is clever, but not always subtle.

If shedding is sudden, heavy, patchy, painful, or comes with scalp irritation, it is worth checking in with your naturopath, GP or other trusted health professional. The Australasian Menopause Society notes that hair loss may sometimes point to iron deficiency or hypothyroidism rather than menopause itself.

Did you know that seasons can play a part too?

Some people notice more shedding at certain times of year. Hair has its own rhythm, and seasonal shifts may make that rhythm more noticeable.

So yes, you may feel like your shower drain is personally attacking you in autumn or spring.

That does not always mean permanent hair loss. It may simply be your normal shedding cycle having a ore active month.

Still, your body deserves attention. If something feels very different for you, don’t dismiss it. You know your normal better than any search result, including the ones written by a suspiciously confident man on a forum in 2011.

Your scalp matters more than ever

When hair feels thinner or more fragile, it is tempting to focus only on the ends. But healthy looking hair starts at the scalp.

Think of your scalp as the garden bed. Glamorous? No. Accurate? Sadly, yes.

A clean, comfortable scalp gives your hair the best environment to grow. That means gentle cleansing, avoiding heavy build up, massaging with your fingertips when you wash, and not punishing your scalp with harsh products because your roots looked oily before school drop off.

A good scalp routine should feel fresh, not stripped.

And relax, we’ve all got to slow down and relax a little more… it rewards you in spaces, I promise!

Be gentler with the lengths

Ageing hair can feel drier through the mid lengths and ends. It may not tolerate heat styling, brushing or colour quite the way it used to.

This is where small changes help.

Use conditioner properly… that means not rushing the hold time when your conditioner is in. Add a mask when your hair feels rough or dull. Brush from the ends up. Let your hair air dry when you can. Use less heat where possible, and when you do style, be kind about it.

Your hair does not need to be wrestled into submission every morning.

It has been through enough. Haven’t we all.

So how about BodFood

BodFood is not here to diagnose your hormones or join the HRT debate wearing a lab coat and an attitude.

We are here to help you care for your hair in a way that feels clean, effective and actually doable.

If your scalp feels oily but your ends feel dry, use a gentle shampoo at the roots and conditioner through the lengths. If you are washing too often because your roots get oily, our Natural Dry Shampoo can help stretch wash days without sending dry ends through another cleanse.

If your hair feels flat, our Organic Sea Salt Spray can bring back softness, texture and volume without the aerosol fog. If your ends feel fragile, a nourishing conditioner, mask or smoothing product can help make hair feel softer and more manageable.

The aim is not to chase the hair you had at 21.

The aim is to care beautifully for the hair you have now.

What actually helps

Start with your scalp. Keep it clean, calm and free from heavy build up.

Condition your lengths. Dry ends need softness and slip.

Reduce unnecessary heat. Your straightener does not need daily access rights.

Use dry shampoo wisely. Stretch wash days when your scalp only needs a refresh.

Add texture gently. Sea salt spray can help give fine or flat hair more body.

Eat properly. Hair is made in the body, not just the bathroom.

Check the basics. Iron, thyroid, stress and health changes can all matter.

Be patient. Hair grows slowly. Very inconsiderate, but true. And I’ll repeat… relax, we’ve got to relax more.

The bottom line

Hair changes as we age. But that doesn’t mean we can’t do things to boost it and bring it back to life. We don’t have to subscribe to the age thing!

Sometimes it sheds more. Sometimes it feels finer. Sometimes it loses shine. Sometimes it becomes dry, fluffy, flat or weirdly uncooperative, like it has read one article about boundaries and taken things too far.

You do not need to panic.

You do not need to buy every miracle bottle on the internet.

You do need to listen, care gently, and check in with your health if the change feels sudden, severe or unusual.

Your hair is part of your body’s story.

Not a problem.

Not a youth test to pass.

Just something worth caring for.

FAQs

Is hair shedding normal as you age?

Some shedding is normal because hair naturally moves through growth and shedding cycles. If shedding becomes sudden, heavy, patchy or unusual for you, speak with your GP or naturopath.

Can perimenopause affect hair?

Hormonal shifts around perimenopause and menopause may affect hair for some women, but hair changes can also be linked to stress, iron levels, thyroid issues, illness, diet, medication or genetics.

Does menopause cause hair thinning?

Hair thinning can become more common after menopause, but it is not the only possible cause. Female pattern hair loss can happen at any age, though it is more common after menopause.

Why does my hair shed more in some seasons?

Some people notice more shedding at certain times of year. This can be part of a natural shedding rhythm, but any sudden or severe change should be checked.

How can I care for ageing hair naturally?

Use gentle shampoo, condition the lengths, reduce heat styling, brush softly, care for your scalp, use dry shampoo to avoid over washing, and add nourishing treatments when your hair feels dry or fragile.
